Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. At a time often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and championed its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to evolve comedy past its current layer of irony. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
