European Cup Matches Tonight: Manchester City v Bayer Leverkusen & Additional Games

Greetings to another evening of thrilling European Cup soccer. 9 matches are set for tonight, featuring three English clubs in play. Chelsea meet Barcelona in the standout match of the night, whilst The Magpies visit the French side and Manchester City host Leverkusen.

Current Standings

It's the halfway stage of the group phase, meaning the standings is starting to take shape. Each of the six British clubs are currently in the upper twelve, but there are only two pts between fifth and 16th position, so there's a sense of volatility about the whole thing. It’s all up for grabs.

This Evening's Games

  • Benfica lead Ajax 1-0 (17:45)
  • Union SG and Galatasaray level at 0-0 (5.45pm)
  • Juventus face Bodo/Glimt
  • Chelsea v Barcelona
  • Villarreal meet Dortmund
  • Leverkusen visit Man City
  • Marseille v Newcastle
  • Qarabag play Napoli
  • Athletic Bilbao clash with Slavia Prague

Historical Context

The only previous meeting between Marseille and Newcastle was the Europa League semifinal of 2004, won by an emerging superstar from Ivory Coast. Bayer Leverkusen and Manchester City have never met before. Barcelona and Chelsea have a notable history.

Initial Game Reports

Just one goal during the opening period of the early fixtures. Dahl's sixth-minute goal has given Jose Mourinho’s Benfica a 1-0 advantage at Ajax.

Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille

Although The Magpies traveled to the south of France coming off their restorative 2-1 home English top-flight win over Manchester City on the weekend, and having defeated Union Saint-Gilloise, the Portuguese side and Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League, their sole away victory since early April came in Brussels at Union Saint-Gilloise.

It's not that Eddie Howe was overly keen to talk about the psychological aspect of this away form issue. “The European Cup is different to domestic games,” said the manager, whose side are 6th in the European table, with 9 pts from a possible twelve and automatic progression to the knockout phase almost within touching distance. “I am not sure if you can draw parallels between them.”

We have a separate live blog for Chelsea v Barcelona. Murray, the minute-by-minute equivalent of Maradona is handling for that.
