‘Every minor detail – execute them’: The striker’s journey from injury table to goals with the Basque club

The first time the Spanish forward played in England, an 18-year-old representing the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at Wycombe’s stadium in fall 2015, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he took the field in the country, against the English side following that, he converted. Another occasion, against Manchester City six weeks after that, indeed, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the city to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in the 2017 season, he scored again. It was a superb volley, as well. “In fact,” he remarks, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” So Athletic did their duty: he was replaced.

“I got well angry,” the forward admits, and then he starts laughing. “I’m sure there’s footage. Our match against United and I performed well. I wasn’t allowed to feature the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed deal, I was scoring goals, speculation was rife, it’s typical. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, the usual talk. I’m not certain if it was accurate, but had they contacted me, my desire was to remain at Bilbao. It’s a privilege.”

Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash

At Lezama, the city, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; after it, the quick travel to Loiu airport and another flight to the UK, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the UCL on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a difficult season for the club, partly because of the demands of their participation. Defeated late on in the local rivalry, they have secured just a single victory of their recent league fixtures and lost against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in European competition. But, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and upcoming events, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.

In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Gorka has been a final four contender in Europe, stopped at the gates the showpiece event by Manchester United, and has ridden an historic vessel along the Nervión river flanked by a million fans after lifting the trophy, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. Now he is the club’s leading marksman in the UCL, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in a long period. “I never imagined this,” he says.

Guruzeta thought it hard enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. Born to the ex-La Real star the former professional and a regular attendee at the opposition side, Guruzeta is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that developed the coach, the legendary midfielder and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after his first-team bow in the 2018 season, he experienced a torn cruciate, the cut, a relegation and a recall before he could truly get a chance, coming back aged 26 to enjoy the highlights of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the European competition.

“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the first team but every phase you advance through you’re persisting and you can observe the approach. You make it and … you have to leave.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his bow and February 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games at that level and I tear my cruciate.

“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it shifted the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is challenging, but it helps. You cultivate routines previously lacking. It’s not about neglect, but I attended practice and then head home, as a youngster does. At Lezama, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Practice, prevention. Hit the weights. Should your hips be uneven, address that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, enhance it further. All the minor details: execute them.

“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have experienced contact countless occasions. Extremely powerful. Reviewing old images: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and the change is dramatic. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; no exceptions.”

You also have to play. He left upset in the pandemic season, in his early twenties, dropping into the second division. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he netted three goals in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the he found his form. “Players go through it: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and if one day a vacancy arises for your role, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. Upon the recall, it was a dream come true. To then win the Copa del Rey, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. All the more so after the previous season which, on occasions, was about endurance. From top scorer with a high tally, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
