Hamilton Island, one of the Popular Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by US Investment Giant.

An iconic tropical holiday destination situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American investment group in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.

“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.

The Reported Acquisition Agreement

Headquartered in New York, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary approvals from regulators.

The sellers issued a comment noting they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of countless Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

The Island's Size and Amenities

Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.

Roughly 30% of the area is built upon, including a substantial array of facilities:

  • Five separate hotels
  • Over twenty dining and drinking venues
  • Twenty shops and retail spaces
  • An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
  • A boat marina and a commercial airport

Hamilton Island is described as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, vendors, and local businesses.

A Look Back at Ownership

The late billionaire Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.

Hamilton's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to simple iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from the outback and southern states.

Broader Portfolio and Regional Background

The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. Its name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
