Larry Summers Leaves from AI Company's Directors
One-time economic leader Larry Summers is departing from the board at OpenAI, just a week after a series of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became widely known.
The economist commented in a release that he was "grateful for the privilege to have contributed, enthusiastic about the prospects of the organization, and look forward tracking their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who formerly presided over Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed messages showed that the economist communicated with Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 apprehension for alleged human trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the AI firm said it accepted the economist's determination to depart.
"We acknowledge his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the Board," OpenAI commented.
Congressional Action
This development arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch decided on this week to approve a measure that would mandate the federal prosecutors to release its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will afterward head to the office of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. The President has said he intends to approve the measure, after modifying his stance on the subject following objections from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-connected emails disclosed by the Congressional committee recently referenced multiple high-profile figures in the financier's previous network, without suggesting any criminal activity by those people.
The communications indicated that the professor and the financier often met for meals, with the billionaire often trying to link the official to influential international personalities.
Personal Accountability
After the emails were released with the wider community, Summers expressed he took "full responsibility for my misguided judgment to persist in corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he desired "to reestablish trust and repair bonds with the people nearest to me".
Professional History
Summers served in senior posts under party leaders; serving as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He led the university from 2001 to 2006 and is still a faculty member there. When announcing his withdrawal from public duties recently on this week, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' statement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a progressive think tank in DC where he was a senior fellow, verified that he was ceased to be connected with the institution.
The former official joined the leadership of the AI company, which makes the language model, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to replace its top executive Sam Altman.
