The Boss Maresca Labels Lead-Up Period as The 'Most Difficult Two Days' at the Blues
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca stated that the preparation to the weekend's triumph against Everton constituted "the toughest 48 hours" since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.
The 44-year-old delivered a puzzling message in his after-game media briefing despite notching a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those points lifted Chelsea once again into the Premier League's top four, potentially improving the atmosphere following a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had extended the team's drought without a win to four fixtures.
But, when asked about the full-back's contribution and general display, Maresca surprisingly disclosed his annoyance over the preceding 48-hour period within the club.
"How the lads want to develop has been fantastic and this is the explanation why I applaud them - because with so many problems, they are excelling after a difficult week," he stated.
"Since I joined the club, the past 48 hours have been the toughest because several people failed to back us."
Pressed on his meaning, the former Leicester City manager elaborated: "Most difficult 48 hours since I joined the club because people failed to back me and the team."
When questioned if he was referring to people internally at Chelsea, he responded: "Broadly speaking. In general," before specifying when queried if it was aimed at fans or the media: "I adore the fans and we are extremely pleased with the fans."
Fitness & Disciplinary Woes
Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's persistent injury and disciplinary issues, noting they had been missing star attacker Cole Palmer for much of the season, as well as losing key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and striker Liam Delap to a couple of serious injuries.
"I truly commend the players and the squad because we played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them minus Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he explained.
"And this squad, regardless of who is on the pitch, they are doing fantastic. Today was 5 games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer playing, we said many times that he's our top player but we play almost all season without our best player.
"We play 5 games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the explanation why I'm so happy for the players and it's something that I would like people externally to appreciate because the work from the players is remarkable."
Chelsea's win over Everton consolidated their standing in fourth in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle to come in the coming days.
Uncertainty Regarding Maresca's Remark
It was not immediately clear who or what prompted Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the most difficult of his tenure as Chelsea head coach.
In that timeframe, the Italian had traveled back with his staff and players from his native Italy, conducted a session at the training ground, attended a pre-match news conference where he appeared at ease, and secured a victory over an high-flying Everton side.
It was unclear whether any particular media reports had unsettled him, if social media discourse were a factor, or if it was something more significant from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca only sought to rule out that it was an matter involving the club's fans, some of whom have still have yet to fully embrace him since his appointment from Leicester during July 2024.
