The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The previous series concluded in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details hinted.

In a statement, the creator commented: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new installment."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

The Scottish actor described being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he added.

Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.

However, the corporation announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
