The Reason Los Blancos Have 'Total Confidence' in Teenager Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, including five starts.

Whenever a teenage creates Real Madrid history in a key Champions League tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.

During his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a last eight berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent From La Fabrica

The midfielder is the latest to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He joined Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was during a pre-season game in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

In the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso invited Pitarch to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this every night when sleeping, the first day I started playing football, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," said Pitarch following his debut.

"I have just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the best competition."

Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his age and experience.

"He is a extremely fast player, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with great stamina, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued he. "He always wants the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the main squad. It is delightful to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through local academies before joining the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.

Under international regulations, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they play in a competitive full international.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with interest.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose La Roja, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with the German champions.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club chase future success.

After his notable contributions to date on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my minutes on the pitch," he said following the win at Etihad Stadium.
