UK, UN and EU Denounce an ‘Egregious Wrong’ of Pro-Democracy Activist Jimmy Lai’s Two-Decade Imprisonment.
The sentencing of media publisher and British citizen Jimmy Lai to two decades behind bars in Hong Kong has sparked international condemnation. Rights groups and multiple governments have labeled the security-related charges driven by politics.
International Outcry and Demands for Freedom
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper remarked that the 20-year term amounts to a prison term lasting the rest of his natural life. She characterized the trial as being driven by political motives pursuant to legislation designed to silence critics of China. She urged Hong Kong's authorities to terminate his suffering and free him to his family.
“This ruling demonstrates how the ambiguous and wide-ranging clauses of Hong Kong’s security law may be enforced in contravention of global human rights commitments,” remarked top UN human rights official Volker Türk.
An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, stated the EU “deeply regrets” the conclusion of the judicial process and demanded his prompt and absolute freedom.
Context of the Prosecution
Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was arrested in 2020 the imposition of a controversial national security law in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities in the wake of months of pro-democracy protests which Lai and his newspaper supported.
He was sentenced on allegations encompassing colluding to publish subversive content and plotting to collaborate with external actors. The second set of accusations were brought under the controversial security law.
Family Concerns
The activist's child, Sebastien, conveyed that his father fears dying alone without seeing his family again. The legal team described him the “planet's most prominent political prisoner” in custody today.
Sebastien Lai commented that while the sentence was expected, its announcement felt worse than imagined, yet it provided some “relief” that the judicial farce had concluded.
Political Repercussions
The verdict has influenced diplomatic ties between London and Beijing. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he discussed Lai’s case in talks with President Xi Jinping earlier this year. Nevertheless, the extent of progress towards his release is uncertain.
Sebastien Lai questioned the point of improved bilateral relations between the UK and China, saying it felt “rather incongruous.”
Authorities' Statements
On the other hand, the officials from China welcomed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s leader John Lee stated the ruling demonstrated that “justice is served.”
The mouthpiece of China’s diplomatic corps, Lin Jian, described Lai as the “mastermind” behind past unrest and stated the trial had been “justified and legal.” He called on foreign countries not to interfere in the nation's domestic matters.
A Defining Moment
Press rights groups called Lai as a icon for diminishing media freedom in Hong Kong. Reporters Without Borders' director general said it was a “bleak moment for those who cherish a free press.”
Given an almost 100% success rate in prosecuting national security offences, Lai’s severe sentence is viewed as the strictest yet imposed under the controversial legislation.
